Curriculum & Instruction

Jackson County Public Schools serves elementary-aged students at six of our schools. We use instruction based on the science of reading for reading and writing in our classrooms. In mathematics, we focus on building understanding of major concepts in foundational math skills and proficiency in computational skills and problem-solving.
 

JCPS Literacy Intervention Plan

The Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) process provides uniquely qualified students who possess mastery knowledge of content the ability to progress and advance in coursework when they are ready, without the traditional barrier of seat time. A student who is able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the knowledge, skills, and understandings of a particular course will earn credit for that course, thereby ensuring that every student has the opportunity for the most rigorous and appropriate course of study based on academic progress and need.

Jackson County Public Schools serves middle school students at each of our K-8 schools. High school students are served at one of our four high schools including one comprehensive high school, two early-colleges, and an alternative school. Standards-based instruction and a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) are the focus of core instruction and district initiatives.

Jackson County Public Schools teaches the NC Standard Course of Study as adopted and facilitated through the NC Department of Public Instruction.  You can find the Standard Course of Study that all NC public schools are expected to teach at Standard Course of Study.

Materials in libraries and media centers are reviewed by School Media Coordinators who are licensed by the state of NC and who possess a master's degree in Library Science. School Media Coordinators review and vet all resources placed in school media centers. A record of all books and materials is maintained in the Follett media directory online which may be found at Follett Destiny.

Jackson County Public Schools supports multilingual learners through a variety of means. Our ML program serves students at all schools who qualify for support based on home language surveys and English language proficiency assessments. State and federal guidelines are used to build and measure the success of our ML program. The North Carolina State School Board policy uses WIDA’s performance definitions to measure English language proficiency.
